History

  • June 2016: Accessibility Advisory Board and Human Relations Commission merged
  • August 2020: Adopted duties of the Retired Citizens Advisory Council

Purpose

  • Ensure the benefits of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act are extended to Arkansas City residents
  • Provide advice to the City on accessibility issues

Membership

  • 5 to 7 members
  • Appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Commission

Requirements

  • At least 2 members: persons with disabilities, or relatives/caretakers of persons with disabilities
  • At least 2 members: age 60 or older
  • Preference for those with experience serving people with disabilities, seniors, or with expertise in accessibility issues

Terms

  • Members serve 3-year terms
