Governing Authority

  • Charter Ordinance Nos. 8, 8A, 19, 20, and 33
  • Municipal Code: Part II, Chapter 2, Article III, Division 8

Appointment & Membership

  • The Mayor appoints six (6) members with the consent of the Board of City Commissioners.
  • All members must be residents of Arkansas City.
  • The Mayor serves as an ex officio member with voting privileges, but may appoint another City Commissioner to serve in his or her place.
  • Term limits: Three (3) consecutive three-year (3) terms.

Representation Requirements

Membership must always include at least four (4) members who are either:

  • A person with a disability, or
  • A relative or primary caretaker of a person with a disability.

Preference is given to applicants with:

  • Experience working with people with disabilities.
  • Expertise in accessibility issues.

Term Length & Meetings

  • Terms are for three years.
  • The board meets at least twice a year.
  • Current schedule: Second Monday of each month, 5:30 PM
  • Location: Arkansas City Public Library
