Street Division

Core Duties

  • Snow & ice removal
  • Street resurfacing and sweeping
  • Routine street and alley maintenance
  • Care of 11 miles of dikes/levees
  • Upkeep of 1,700 miles of canals and roadways each year

Inclement Weather Response

  • Storm Damage: Crews clear streets after storms, remove fallen branches, and cut/haul away downed trees.
  • Snow & Ice: Melting agents applied during and after snowstorms. If needed, snow is windrowed to the center and removed. Emergency routes and main streets are cleared first.

Street Maintenance & Repair

  • Potholes: ~100 tons of asphalt used annually
  • Gravel Roads & Alleys: Graded and re-graveled as needed
  • Reconstruction: Base failures repaired, then overlaid with asphalt or restored with brick

Street Sweeping

  • Every street swept at least once yearly
  • Downtown and major routes swept more often

Painting

  • Center lines, lanes, and crosswalks repainted each year
  • 300 gallons of paint and 1,900 lbs of glass beads used annually

Street Signs

  • Maintains street names, speed limits, parking, and school zone signs
  • Vandalism accounts for many replacements
