Facility History & Upgrades
The Arkansas City Water Environment Protection Facility has served our community for decades, evolving through several major upgrades to keep pace with environmental standards and community needs.
- 1958 – Original facility constructed, featuring Trickling Filters and Anaerobic Sludge Digestion.
- 1982 – Expanded to include Activated Sludge treatment, boosting capacity to 2.1 million gallons per day (MGD) with peak flow capability of 4.7 MGD.
- 2001 – Major upgrade introduced:
- Ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection system
- High river-level pump station to manage treated effluent during flooding events
- Replacement of aging equipment, including pumps and bar screens
- Focus: improved protection of the Arkansas River by reducing bacteria in effluent.
- 2020–2023 – Modernization project:
- Engineering team guided design-bid-build process
- Construction began in 2022 with a new administration building
- Comprehensive $13 million rehabilitation of core wastewater treatment processes
- Project completed in October 2023.
