Arkansas City Firefighter Honored at Kansas Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony

Arkansas City firefighter Trevor Martin Rusk was among four Kansas firefighters honored Sunday, October 5, during the 24th annual Kansas Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremony held at the Kansas Firefighters Museum in Wichita.

Rusk’s name was officially added to the Kansas Fallen Firefighter Memorial wall, joining the ranks of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

In June 2023, Rusk began his career with the Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department, where he quickly earned the respect of his colleagues for his professionalism, work ethic, and dedication to helping others. He served with the department until his passing in August 2024.

Rusk was remembered by fellow firefighters and loved ones as a dedicated public servant, a loyal teammate, and a man whose quiet strength and compassion defined his character both on and off duty.

The ceremony, hosted by the Kansas Fallen Firefighters Memorial Board, recognized four firefighters added this year: Trevor Rusk of Arkansas City, Ty Voth of Wichita, Gregory Rausch of Emporia, and Eric B’Hymer of Iola.

Among those attending from the Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department were Fire Chief Stuart Cassaboom, Captain/Paramedic Josh Bowker, Firefighter/EMT Cade Gillock, and Firefighter/Paramedic Shawn Dent.

Dent shared a special bond with Rusk, having worked with him prior to both joining the Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department, as well as attending EMT school together.

Arkansas City Fire Chief Stuart Cassaboom said Rusk’s inclusion on the memorial wall ensures his service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

“Trevor was the kind of firefighter everyone wanted beside them—steady, skilled, and selfless,” Cassaboom said. “He gave everything to protect others, and we are deeply proud to see his name recognized among Kansas’ finest.”

The Kansas Firefighters Museum is located at 1300 S. Broadway in Wichita.
