Phillip and Michelle Bruce Named Brighten the Block recipients
The City of Arkansas City is proud to announce that Phillip and Michelle Bruce, of the 200 block of Kansas Avenue, have been selected as the very first honorees of the new Brighten the Block community recognition program. The Bruces received an overwhelming number of nominations from community members who praised their dedication to restoring and improving their home and yard.
The Bruce family’s property has become a true neighborhood standout. After experiencing major damage to their home in 2024, Phillip and Michelle turned the challenge into an opportunity to fully restore and beautify their property. What could have been a lasting setback has instead become a story of resilience, hard work, and community pride.
Since then, the Bruces have completely renovated the exterior of their home, including new black shutters and trim, updated finishes, and fresh landscaping. Nominators frequently noted how the grass and yard are always meticulously maintained, and how the home’s curb appeal is impossible to ignore. One nomination even joked that drivers have to say, “Honey, stop the car!” when passing by.
“Everything about this property is updated and beautiful,” one nominator shared. “It’s truly a brand-new house, with wonderful yard work that makes the whole block look better.”
The Brighten the Block program highlights residents and business owners who take pride in their properties, and, through their efforts, help make Arkansas City more welcoming and beautiful. Winners receive a yard sign and public recognition for their contributions.
“Phillip and Michelle have turned a challenge into a triumph,” said Shana Adkisson, Communication Director. “Their hard work and persistence have not only restored their home but also lifted the spirit of their entire neighborhood.”
The City encourages residents to keep nominating properties that showcase pride and creativity. Nominated properties must be located within city limits.
