Arkansas City awarded Grant for Wilson Park playground improvements
City Commissioners approved a resolution during the February 3, 2026, meeting accepting a $628,728 Kansas Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for park improvements at Wilson Park.
The Commission’s action authorizes the City to execute the grant agreement, allowing the project to officially move forward.
The grant, awarded by the Kansas Department of Commerce, will fund new playground equipment and related improvements at Wilson Park to improve safety, accessibility and play opportunities for Arkansas City families. The new playground area will replace outdated equipment.
The total estimated cost of the project is $785,910. In addition to the $628,728 CDBG award, the project includes $157,182 in local contributions. The local share is made up of:
• $50,000 from a V.J. Wilkins Foundation grant
• $87,572 in City capital improvement funds for playground equipment
• $19,610 in in-kind City staff labor
“This project represents another important step in improving one of our most well-used community spaces,” said City Manager Randy Frazer. “By leveraging grant funding and local investment, we are able to continue strengthening Wilson Park for residents of all ages.”
In combination with the new playground equipment, other planned improvements at Wilson Park — including the splash pad and new pickleball courts — are expected to begin construction soon, continuing the City’s coordinated effort to enhance recreational opportunities throughout the park.
Following approval of the grant agreement, the City will begin final coordination and implementation of the project.
