Incident Leads to Man's Arrest

On February 10, 2023, at 10:58 P.M., officers of the Arkansas City Police Department, along with Cowley County Sheriff’s Deputies, were dispatched to the address of 801 S. Summit Street APT #2, Arkansas City, for a report of a disturbance possibly involving a stabbing.

Upon officer’s arrival, they were directed upstairs, where it was reported that a juvenile female was being battered. Officers went up the stairs to the apartment in question, and a juvenile female exited the residence. The suspect was given verbal commands to exit the residence. A male who was later identified as Jermiah Joseph Hunter, age 19, of Arkansas City, exited the residence.

When officers tried to place Hunter into custody, it was reported that he resisted arrest by striking and attempting to bite several officers. It was later learned that one of the reporting parties had tried to stop a fight between Hunter and his juvenile girlfriend. In doing so, the reporting party received a laceration to his hand. It was also learned while officers were on scene that Hunter had threatened to kill several individuals, including law enforcement.

The wounded victim and officers were treated at the scene and released. One officer received further treatment for a minor injury at SCK Health but was released later that night. Hunter was booked into the Cowley County Jail on charges of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault two counts, Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Battery on Law Enforcement Officer four counts, Obstruction to Law Enforcement, Minor Consumption of Alcohol, and Domestic Battery. The current bond is listed at $53,800.

A defendant’s guilt or innocence is to be determined by a court of law.
