Arkansas City Police Department badgeARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (July 12, 2019) The Arkansas City Police Department arrested an Arkansas City man July 9 in connection with the rape and sexual abuse of two local children.

Aureliano Pablo-Matias, 22, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of rape and one count of identity theft, all of which are felonies. He was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City on the identity theft charge.

Pablo-Matias remained in custody at the time of this release. There currently is no bond for the rape charges and his bond will be set later in court.

Officers responded at 8:45 p.m. July 8 to an address in northwest Arkansas City for a report of sexual abuse of a child. They contacted the family of the victim, a 10-year-old-girl, who later was taken to William Newton Hospital in Winfield for a forensic examination.

The next day, the child was interviewed and police identified a suspect known to the victim.

A second victim, aged 12, also came forward and was interviewed. The second victim identified the same suspect, later identified as Pablo-Matias. Officers located and arrested him later that same day.

Additionally, investigators learned Pablo-Matias allegedly was using a false identity to work at an Arkansas City business.

A defendant’s guilt or innocence is to be determined by a court of law.
