Arkansas City Police Department badgeThe Arkansas City Police Department arrested a man early Sept. 7 after he allegedly stole a motorized scooter from the local Walmart Supercenter.

Miguel Angel Beraza, 23, was arrested on suspicion of one count of felony theft of property or services totaling between $1,000 and $25,000.

Beraza was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in lieu of $2,000 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City. He remained in custody at the time of this release.

Officers were dispatched at 2:01 a.m. Sept. 7 to Walmart, located at 2701 N. Summit St., for a report that a man had ridden the motorized scooter out of the store and off the store’s property.

They spotted the abandoned scooter in the 2400 block of North Summit Street while en route.

The immediate area was searched and police made contact with Beraza. After he was matched to the surveillance footage of the incident, he was taken into custody and later transferred to the county jail.

The scooter was recovered and returned to Walmart, apparently undamaged.

A defendant’s guilt or innocence is to be determined by a court of law.
