The
Arkansas City Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team was developed and made
operational in February of 1999. The team consists of active members made up
from within the ranks of the department who specialize in technical rescue
situations. These areas include confined space incidents, high angle rescue,
swift water rescue, building collapse, or any type of rescue that requires
the specialties of the team and equipment.
Team
members train throughout the year doing simulated exercises in rescue and
rope work. These exercises usually take place at areas of concern such as the
mills, wastewater treatment plant, water plant, rivers, and various
industries that have been supportive of the teams training.

The
technical Rescue Team has a vast variety of equipment to handle different
situations and also specialized equipment such as gas monitors, intrinsic
radio equipment, medical protocols, ventilation equipment, lighting, and
supplied air-breathing equipment.
Operational
training is under the command of Captain Joel Day, who is certified in
confined space and high angle rescue. Capt. Day has been with the department
since 1981.
