Arkansas City Declared Purple Heart City

Mayor Jay Warren made history during the January 16 City Commission meeting by officially declaring Arkansas City the first Purple Heart City in Cowley County.

Members of VFW Post 1254 were present as Mayor Warren read the proclamation, solidifying the city's commitment to honoring Purple Heart recipients. The meeting also welcomed Randy Frank, the Department of Kansas American Legion Commander.

"The designation of Arkansas City as a Purple Heart City holds deep meaning. It reflects the city's dedication to recognizing and honoring Purple Heart recipients, both living and deceased. Additionally, the city aims to pay tribute to all veterans residing within its boundaries who have bravely served in the military," Frank said.

Frank's son is commemorated through the Sgt. Kevin A. Gilbertson Memorial Bridge in south Arkansas City.

In addition to the proclamation, City Manager Randy Frazer is coordinating efforts to create signage declaring Arkansas City a Purple Heart City at the city limits. The initiative includes plans for a recognition celebration to commemorate the occasion once the signs are installed.
